Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja refused to grant bail to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and instead ordered an accelerated hearing of his case involving charges of treasonable felony.
Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, appeared in court where his legal team expressed dissatisfaction over the ruling, citing difficulties in accessing their client and alleging violations of his constitutional rights.
Counsel for Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, highlighted concerns about Kanu's health and treatment while in custody, requesting a change in his detention location or house arrest, both of which were rejected by Justice Nyako. Kanu himself addressed the court, revealing health issues and expressing grievances over his treatment.
The court adjourned the case to April 17, 2024, for the commencement of trial, amidst ongoing legal battles and public scrutiny surrounding Kanu's detention and trial proceedings.
