The Federal High Court of Nigeria has refuted claims that any judge recused themselves from the trial of Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu. A statement released on Tuesday by the court’s Chief Registrar, Sulaiman Amida Hassan, dismissed the reports as misleading and baseless.
According to the statement, Chief Judge John Tsoho never declared Kanu’s arrest illegal nor stepped down from the case. Instead, in his administrative role, he reassigned the case to another judge, a routine procedure within the judicial system.
The court condemned the spread of misinformation, emphasizing that false reports could erode public confidence in the judiciary. It urged the public to rely on verified information from official court channels and warned against deliberate attempts to distort facts.
The legal team representing Kanu has been advised to await further instructions regarding proceedings under the new judge. The court reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring due process is followed in all cases.
The Federal High Court urged journalists and media outlets to verify their reports before publication to prevent unnecessary panic and misinformation. Any further inquiries regarding the case are to be directed to the court’s Information Department.
