Former President Muhammadu Buhari refrained from removing petrol subsidies during his tenure to protect ordinary Nigerians, Femi Adesina reveals. The decision, rooted in Buhari’s compassion for the poor, was described as prioritizing societal stability. Adesina highlights Buhari’s enduring legacy as a leader devoted to the welfare of the underprivileged.
Femi Adesina, former spokesperson for ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed that Buhari’s decision to retain the petrol subsidy during his administration was driven by his commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. Adesina made this statement in a tribute celebrating Buhari’s 82nd birthday on December 17, 2024.

Adesina highlighted Buhari’s dedication to the welfare of the underprivileged, referring to him as "Ore Mekunu," a Yoruba phrase meaning "friend of the poor." He explained that while the administration understood the financial strain caused by the subsidy, Buhari believed removing it would disproportionately burden citizens.

During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Buhari instructed then-Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed to prioritize the timely payment of salaries and pensions, showcasing his concern for workers struggling during the pandemic. According to Adesina, Buhari consistently argued that Nigerians had not significantly benefited when global oil prices were high and, therefore, should not shoulder the burden when prices fell.

Though the administration planned to eliminate the subsidy by mid-2023, as outlined in the budget, the responsibility fell to Buhari’s successor, President Bola Tinubu. Tinubu’s immediate removal of the subsidy in May 2023 led to sharp increases in fuel prices and living costs across the nation.

Adesina lauded Buhari’s enduring popularity, attributing it to his unwavering support for ordinary Nigerians. Even in retirement, Buhari remains a figure admired for his connection with the people, Adesina concluded.
