The Nigerian government is set to launch a multipurpose National ID card to enhance financial inclusion, simplify government services, and provide access to loans. It will include verifiable credit scores and be required for job applications. The card will enable access to various government interventions and digital services.

The Presidency has underscored the significance of obtaining the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)’s soon-to-be-launched multipurpose ID card for all Nigerians. In a video released by the President's Media Centre, the Presidency highlighted that the card would unlock access to various government services and enhance transparency in citizens’ interactions with the government.

Beyond government services, the card will allow Nigerians to obtain loans from financial institutions, as it will include verifiable credit scores based on financial history. This development is part of a wider initiative to improve financial inclusion, with the card set to integrate over 100 million Nigerians into the banking system. As a result, many previously excluded from financial services will be able to engage with the formal economy.

Additionally, the NIMC has teamed up with the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) to create credit scores based on individuals' National Identification Numbers (NIN). While the NIN is already required for obtaining passports and driver's licenses, the new multipurpose card will also be needed for job applications, both public and private. This will ensure employers have access to verified, reliable information about potential employees.

To facilitate easy access, the NIMC has partnered with banks across the country, enabling Nigerians to apply for their cards at nearby bank branches. This initiative, which will also include the eNaira digital currency, is set to streamline payments and improve access to government services, helping Nigerians fully participate in the country’s digital economy.
