The Federal Government has approved 11 new private universities in Nigeria, granting provisional licenses after a rigorous evaluation. Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa confirmed the moratorium on further approvals. The FEC also sanctioned ₦733 billion for infrastructure projects, including major road upgrades and a flyover in Enugu to ease congestion.

The Federal Government has granted provisional licenses to 11 new private universities across Nigeria following a rigorous 13-step assessment by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the approval after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The newly established universities include New City University (Ogun), University of Fortune (Ondo), Eranova University (Abuja), Minaret University (Osun), Abubakar Toyin University (Kwara), Southern Atlantic University (Akwa Ibom), Lens University (Kwara), Monarch University (Ogun), Tonnie Iredia University of Communication (Edo), Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management (Lagos), and Kevin Eze University (Enugu).

Dr. Alausa also confirmed that a moratorium has been placed on the approval of new private universities, except for those that have reached advanced stages in the licensing process. He reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to expanding access to higher education while ensuring quality and infrastructure improvements.

In addition to the university approvals, the FEC sanctioned four major infrastructure projects totaling ₦733 billion, including a ₦507 billion upgrade of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway and a ₦24 billion flyover in Enugu to ease congestion.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed that the FEC also approved the dualization of the Odukpani-Itu-Ideden-Ikot Ekpene Road in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States for ₦55 billion, ensuring critical transport connectivity.

These approvals reflect the government’s focus on enhancing education and infrastructure development across the country.
