The Nigerian federal government has donated N30 million to the family of the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the country's national flag. Akinkunmi, who passed away on August 30, 2023, at 87, was recognized for his monumental contribution to Nigeria's identity.

In a tribute to his legacy, President Bola Tinubu had earlier promised support to the family and a national burial. However, Akinkunmi was laid to rest on September 6, 2024, after the family had to wait a year for the state burial that was promised. On January 30, 2025, a delegation from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), led by Lanre Issa-Onilu, presented the N30 million cheque to the Akinkunmi family in Ibadan.

Issa-Onilu stated that the donation was meant to show appreciation for Akinkunmi's significant contributions to the nation, rather than compensating for his services. Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, the late designer’s son, expressed gratitude on behalf of the family, thanking President Tinubu for the financial support.
