The Federal Government has ordered the closure of the waterway running between Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge in Lagos after a section of the Eko Bridge sustained serious damage.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced on Saturday during a routine inspection of major bridges in Lagos. According to him, a dredging operation led to a major accident when a dredger struck and damaged a critical support structure under Eko Bridge, causing a pier to collapse and sink.
Umahi confirmed that the owner or operator of the dredger responsible for the damage has been apprehended. He assured that firm actions would be taken against those involved. To prevent further risks, he called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure the immediate closure of the affected waterway section.
The Minister warned that any continued movement under the bridge could worsen the damage and potentially endanger lives.
Officials are currently evaluating the full extent of the structural issues to determine the necessary repair work. Meanwhile, Lagos residents have been urged to obey all safety instructions around the bridges.
This latest incident has intensified concerns about infrastructure safety in Lagos, particularly regarding the maintenance of vital transportation links. The government has promised swift intervention to stabilize the bridge and minimize disruption to traffic and commerce across the city.
