The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed the Federal Government's intention to relocate Ikoyi Prison and other correctional centers due to their proximity to residential areas.

Speaking on a television program, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the challenges posed by urbanization, citing instances where correctional facilities are just meters away from homes. He highlighted the need for buffer zones between prisons and residential areas, stressing the government's commitment to addressing this issue.

The proposed relocation aims to enhance security, safety, and urban planning, aligning with efforts to modernize correctional facilities across the country.

Additionally, Tunji-Ojo mentioned plans for an inmate audit to streamline the prison population and ensure that only deserving individuals are incarcerated. This move reflects the government's broader strategy to improve the corrections system, including renovation and rebuilding of aging prison infrastructure.
