Nigeria’s Super Falcons remain 36th in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking despite their poor performance at the Paris Olympics. Despite losing all three group-stage matches, the team holds steady in their pre-Olympics position. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana and Zambia also saw ranking changes.
In the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, Nigeria’s Super Falcons have maintained their position at 36th, despite a challenging stint at the Paris Olympic Games. Released on August 16, 2024, the updated rankings confirm that the Super Falcons have held their pre-Olympics spot, despite their struggles in Paris.
The Nigerian team faced tough competition in their Olympic group, including Brazil, Spain, and Japan. Their campaign ended on a low note with losses to each of these formidable opponents, culminating in a last-place finish in their group.
Regionally, Nigeria remains the top-ranked African team. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana closely follows in second place, with Morocco, Zambia, and Ghana rounding out the continent’s top five.
Despite a disappointing Olympic performance, the Super Falcons’ ranking reflects their established position in global women’s football. In contrast, Zambia, another African team that participated in the Olympics, saw a rise to 62nd place in the rankings, despite a similar outcome in their group matches. South Africa and Tunisia have also seen improvements, with Banyana Banyana now at 50th and Tunisia climbing to 58th.
Globally, the United States leads the rankings following their gold medal win, with Brazil moving up to eighth after securing silver. Spain, despite a strong showing, has dropped to third place, while England has advanced to second. Germany and Sweden complete the top five. The next update to the FIFA Women’s World Ranking is expected on December 20, 2024.
