Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George has joined Rivers United following his resignation due to disappointing results and a potential demotion by the NFF. In an exclusive interview, Finidi shares his excitement about the club’s vision and new opportunities, aiming to help Rivers United become a dominant force in Nigerian football.
Former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has clarified his swift transition to Rivers United following his recent departure from the Nigerian national team. George, who had initially served as an assistant coach under Jose Peseiro, was elevated to head coach after Peseiro’s exit. His tenure, however, was marred by disappointing results, including a draw against South Africa and a loss to Benin Republic during World Cup qualifiers. These setbacks, coupled with the Nigerian Football Federation's (NFF) plans to demote him in favor of a foreign technical adviser, led to his resignation.
In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom, Finidi explained his decision to join Rivers United, citing the club's stature and potential for growth as key factors. “It’s a new chapter for me, and I like the challenge,” Finidi stated. “I want to help the club grow and become a dominant force in Nigerian and African football.” He expressed enthusiasm for the club’s vision, aligning it with his ambitions for success.
Rivers United, based in Port Harcourt, has been proactive in the transfer market, securing about 10 new players for the upcoming 2024/2025 season. With no continental competitions to contend with, their primary focus will be on securing a top-three finish in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL). Finidi, who previously led Enyimba International FC to an NPFL title, is optimistic about the future and eager to contribute to Rivers United's success.
