First Lady Oluremi Tinubu blames Nollywood, social media, and prosperity preaching for fueling Nigeria’s get-rich-quick mindset, linking it to human trafficking. She urges youths to embrace hard work and patience. Tinubu also pledges support for NAPTIP’s fight against trafficking after rescuing 19 pregnant teenagers from a baby factory.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed concern over the growing “get-rich-quick” mentality among youths, blaming Nollywood, social media, and religious institutions for encouraging the trend. She believes these platforms glorify instant wealth without hard work, contributing to rising human trafficking cases.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Bello, Tinubu emphasized the need for a societal reorientation that promotes patience and diligence. She pointed out that many young Nigerians, influenced by misleading portrayals of success in movies and social media, fall victim to traffickers promising a better life abroad.
She also criticized some religious organizations for their focus on prosperity messages rather than emphasizing the value of labor. According to her, the Bible itself advocates for hard work, yet many preachers mislead their followers into believing wealth can be achieved without effort.
Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to supporting NAPTIP’s efforts in combating human trafficking. She praised the agency’s recent operation that led to the rescue of 19 pregnant teenage girls from a baby factory in Abuja, describing the incident as a wake-up call for authorities and society.
The First Lady urged young Nigerians to reject shortcuts to wealth and instead embrace integrity and perseverance. She called on content creators and religious leaders to use their platforms responsibly to shape a generation that values hard work over quick riches.
