Nigerian singer Flavour N’abania asserts he does not identify as an Afrobeats artist, emphasizing his work as part of a broader category of African music. In a podcast, he criticized media focus on Afrobeats, calling for recognition of diverse African sounds and contributions from artists beyond the genre.
Flavour N’abania, the acclaimed Nigerian singer, recently made it clear that he does not consider himself an Afrobeats artist. In an episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, he stated that he produces "African music," which he believes encompasses a wider range of styles beyond Afrobeats. Flavour expressed that he does not feel overlooked regarding the genre's global success, attributing this to the media's tendency to focus narrowly on Afrobeats.
He pointed out that there are other artists, such as Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platinumz, who are also advancing African music on the international stage without being categorized as Afrobeats musicians. Flavour criticized the media for failing to recognize the diversity within African music, insisting that discussions about African music should highlight all artists, not just those associated with the Afrobeats genre.
While Afrobeats has gained significant traction globally, with stars like Wizkid and Burna Boy making waves, both have similarly expressed that their musical styles are broader than just Afrobeats. Flavour, who started his music career at age 13, has released eight albums and continues to be a significant figure in the African music scene.
