Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has accused the EFCC of targeting him for political reasons, following a controversial raid on the Kogi Government Lodge. Bello’s media team claims the EFCC is executing a biased campaign against him, urging the government to investigate the anti-corruption agency’s actions.
Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of pursuing a political agenda to tarnish his reputation. In a statement issued by his media office, the EFCC is accused of conducting a campaign to defame him for undisclosed reasons.
The statement, signed by Director Ohiare Michael, criticized the EFCC for procedural lapses, citing that despite Bello voluntarily submitting himself for questioning, he was not detained. Later that day, EFCC agents reportedly conducted a raid at the Kogi Government Lodge.
Bello’s media team contends that the EFCC’s focus on him is not about fighting corruption but rather politically motivated, driven by undisclosed interests. They argue that the agency's actions reveal an attempt to damage Bello’s image and potentially harm him politically.
The statement emphasized that Bello respects the legal process and has consistently complied with court orders, noting his willingness to address the allegations through proper legal channels. It also condemned the EFCC for allegedly operating beyond its legal bounds, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and investigate the commission’s actions.
Bello's team reaffirmed his commitment to defending his legal rights and accused the EFCC of being biased in its approach. The former governor’s office concluded by stating that the ongoing legal process should be conducted within the bounds of the law, without external interference or personal vendettas.
