Mudashiru Obasa, former Lagos Assembly speaker, disputes his removal, citing procedural lapses. Accused of misconduct, Obasa claims the process violated constitutional rules. He expressed readiness to challenge the decision, stating he remains undisturbed. Mojisola Meranda, his deputy, was elected as the new speaker amidst growing scrutiny of the Assembly's actions.
Mudashiru Obasa, the former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has criticized the process that led to his removal, claiming it did not follow constitutional procedures. Speaking to supporters at his residence on Joel Ogunnaike Street, Ikeja GRA, Obasa dismissed allegations of financial misconduct as baseless and questioned the legality of the impeachment process.
“I am not disturbed or afraid of being removed, but the rules must be followed. What else am I looking for after serving as a member of the house since 2003 and as a speaker for several years?” he remarked. Obasa also differentiated between removal and impeachment, asserting that his removal lacked proper adherence to legislative procedures.
The former speaker’s ousting occurred on January 13 while he was out of the country. Lawmakers cited gross misconduct and abuse of office as the reasons for their decision. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, the deputy speaker, was elected as the new speaker.
Obasa’s tenure has been marked by controversies, but his dismissal has sparked debates on the integrity of the legislative process in Lagos State. Supporters of the former speaker have described his removal as politically motivated, while others see it as a necessary step for accountability.
The Lagos State Assembly remains under scrutiny as stakeholders call for clarity and adherence to due process in legislative matters. Obasa, meanwhile, maintains his stance that the removal was flawed and insists on his readiness to challenge it.
