Former Nigerian Communications Minister, Dr. Isa Pantami, has raised concerns over several sections of President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills. In a statement, Pantami highlighted the potential of the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024, to transform tax collection if properly implemented but pointed out critical issues that need to be addressed before legislative action proceeds.

Pantami noted the lack of clear definitions in certain sections of the bill, particularly Sections 3(3), 7(6), 8(2), 23, 28, and 95-118, which could lead to challenges in its implementation. These ambiguities, he warned, could be exploited by regulatory bodies and hinder the bill's intended goals. Pantami emphasized that such concerns could only be effectively addressed through broader consultations with stakeholders, including tax experts and business leaders.

Pantami advised the National Assembly to suspend legislative action on the bill for further review. He stressed the importance of revising the bill to prevent confusion and ensure that it serves the national interest. He also urged the government to rebuild public trust, as citizens have grown increasingly suspicious of governmental actions. Pantami’s insights on the bill, which were shared publicly after reviewing the document, contribute to the ongoing national debate over tax reform and its potential impact on Nigeria’s economy.
