Nigeria has lost one of its elder statesmen. Former senator and diplomat Professor Jibril Aminu has died at the age of 85, following a prolonged illness.
  • Professor Aminu passed away on Wednesday, June 5, in Abuja
  • He served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States (1999–2003)
  • Represented Adamawa Central in the Senate from 2003 to 2011
  • Trained as a heart specialist, earned degrees from UI and London
  • Survived by two wives and nine children
Professor Jibril Aminu was more than a politician, he was a rare blend of statesman, scholar, and doctor. His medical credentials, including a PhD in medicine from the UK, gave depth to a career that spanned diplomacy and national politics. From his days as ambassador to his time in the Senate, he carried both gravitas and humility. His passing will be felt across Nigeria’s medical and political spheres, especially in his home state of Adamawa.

As Nigeria prepares for a new political season, voices like Aminu’s, shaped by intellect, service, and global experience, will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
