Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, have been handed a 14-year prison sentence by an accountability court in Rawalpindi for the illegal sale of state gifts.
The court also imposed a ten-year ban on their eligibility for public office and a hefty fine of seven hundred and seventy-seven million rupees ($2.7 million). This comes a day after Khan received a ten-year sentence for revealing state secrets.
The sentencing has raised questions about the concurrent or consecutive nature of the jail terms. In August, Khan was convicted of selling gifts worth over 140 million rupees ($501,000) received during his prime ministership.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Khan, faces electoral challenges as he loses eligibility, and PTI's spokesman challenges the validity of the sentence, alleging a compromised legal process.
