Janne Andersson, former Sweden coach, is appointed as the new head coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles. With experience leading Sweden to the 2018 World Cup and 2020 Euros, Andersson’s arrival marks a shift from the initial shortlist of candidates and aims to revitalize the national team.
In a significant development for Nigerian football, Janne Andersson has been named the new head coach of the Super Eagles. Andersson, aged 61, previously managed Sweden from 2016 to 2023. Under his leadership, Sweden qualified for the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 Euros, though he was unable to secure spots for the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Euros.
Andersson’s appointment marks a departure from the initial shortlist of candidates, which included Herve Renard, Eric Chelle, Tom Saintfiet, and Steve McClaren. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has opted for Andersson despite his lack of experience coaching in Africa.
The last Swedish coach for the Super Eagles was Lars Lagerback, who led the team during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Super Eagles were unable to progress beyond the group stages under his tenure. Additionally, Thomas Denerby, another Swedish coach, guided the Super Falcons to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
Andersson's appointment signals a new chapter for the Super Eagles as they prepare for future international competitions. His previous achievements with Sweden will be crucial as he aims to bring a fresh perspective and strategic insight to Nigeria’s national team.
