Social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, widely recognized as VeryDarkMan (VDM), is at the center of a legal battle as several high-profile Nigerians take him to court over defamation claims. Known for his outspoken and often controversial opinions, VDM is now facing serious legal consequences over statements he made about public figures.

Among those suing him is Femi Falana (SAN), a prominent lawyer, and his son Falz, a well-known musician. The legal action follows allegations by VDM that they accepted bribe money from crossdresser Bobrisky. Despite demands for an apology, VDM refused to back down, prompting the lawsuit.

Bobrisky has also taken legal steps against him, claiming that he falsely accused her of bribing law enforcement officers to dismiss charges against her. She argues that the alleged evidence was fabricated using AI technology to damage her reputation and is now seeking ₦1 billion in damages.

The legal troubles don’t stop there. Esinjemiyotan Atsepoyi, wife of comedian Mr Jollof, is demanding ₦500 million, alleging that VDM publicly spread false and damaging claims about her personal life. She insists the accusations have had a serious impact on her career and reputation.

Jeremiah Fufeyin, a well-known pastor, initially filed a ₦1 billion lawsuit against VDM after the activist questioned his practice of selling religious items. The lawsuit was later withdrawn, though the cleric urged VDM to be more responsible with his remarks.

Radio host and comedian Nedu Wazobia has threatened legal action over allegations that he engaged in sexual misconduct and fraud through his foundation. He has demanded that VDM issue a public apology, delete his statements, and pay ₦500 million in damages.

Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has also entered the legal battle, accusing VDM of falsely stating that she mishandled financial agreements related to her former record label. Her legal team is seeking ₦1.1 billion, a public retraction, and the removal of defamatory posts. A court warrant was recently issued for VDM’s arrest after he failed to attend a scheduled hearing.

The legal storm surrounding VDM has sparked a broader debate about freedom of speech versus defamation. While some support his bold approach to discussing public figures, others argue that reckless allegations can have serious legal consequences.
