Tensions in Rivers State have escalated as lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike accuse Governor Siminalayi Fubara of gross misconduct. The accusations, outlined in a formal letter, include allegations of unauthorized spending, obstruction of legislative functions, and bypassing the Assembly’s approval process in key appointments.
A total of 26 lawmakers submitted the allegations to Speaker Martin Amaewhule, citing Fubara’s alleged financial recklessness and failure to recognize the authority of the legislature. They also claim that salaries and allowances meant for the Assembly and its Clerk, Emeka Amadi, have been withheld.
Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu was also named in the notice, with accusations that she aided in making unauthorized appointments without legislative approval. Speaker Amaewhule, in forwarding the letter to Fubara, referenced constitutional provisions that allow the Assembly to determine whether the allegations warrant further investigation.
The governor has 14 days to formally respond to the notice, after which the lawmakers will decide on the next steps. This development marks a new chapter in the ongoing power struggle between Fubara and the lawmakers aligned with his predecessor, Wike.
