Suspended Rivers governor Siminalayi Fubara met with President Bola Tinubu at the president’s private residence in Lagos on Tuesday, marking a significant political move amid the lingering crisis in Rivers state.
Although the content of the closed-door meeting wasn’t made public, Fubara’s visit comes shortly after he announced his willingness to put aside “pride and personal interest” for the sake of peace. The governor, currently under suspension, has signaled a shift toward reconciliation with his estranged political godfather and former governor, Nyesom Wike.
“We have to come down from our high horses,” Fubara had said in a recent statement, adding that “the state’s interest is paramount.”
- Fubara was suspended alongside his deputy and all Rivers lawmakers in March following deepening tensions with Wike.
- Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers and appointed retired naval chief Ibok-Ette Ibas as sole administrator.
- The crisis began after Fubara took office, and efforts to impeach him intensified division within the House of Assembly.
The visit could signal a thaw in tensions and perhaps the start of a broader resolution to Rivers’ prolonged power struggle.
