The Lagos State Government has sealed 13 markets across the state for repeated violations related to illegal waste disposal. The enforcement, which targets markets such as Ketu and Mile 12, aims to curb the unsanitary disposal of waste along roads, medians, and highways—activities that have plagued these bustling commercial areas for years.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the closures in a statement posted on his X handle on Friday. He explained that the government’s actions are in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. This law mandates responsible waste management practices to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the state.

Wahab emphasized that these closures are necessary for safeguarding public health and restoring order in the affected areas. "These enforcement actions are essential to safeguard public health and restore order to our public spaces," he stated. He also urged market stakeholders to take responsibility for waste management moving forward, warning that any future violations could result in further disruptions.

The full list of markets sealed includes Erukan Market, Mile 12; Oja Oba Market, Ketu; Owoseni Tundas Market; Oba Ogunjobi Market, Mile 12; and several others in Ketu and Mile 12 regions. The Lagos State government has called on residents and market participants to collaborate in creating a cleaner, more sustainable city.

The enforcement is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle the growing environmental challenges in Lagos, and to ensure a livable and safe city for all residents.
