President Bola Tinubu, speaking at the G20 Summit in Brazil, called for urgent reforms to the UN Security Council, advocating two permanent African seats. He lauded the African Union’s inclusion in the G20 and praised Brazil’s Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, aligning its goals with Nigeria’s economic priorities.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized the urgent need for structural reform of the United Nations Security Council to maintain its relevance in addressing global challenges. Speaking at the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tinubu proposed expanding the Council’s membership to include permanent and non-permanent seats that better reflect global diversity.

“Africa deserves priority in this process, with two permanent seats granted to the continent, ensuring equal rights and responsibilities. Nigeria stands ready to represent Africa in this capacity,” Tinubu stated.

The President’s message, delivered by Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, also commended the G20 for its forward-thinking reforms, including granting permanent membership to the African Union. Tinubu highlighted this decision as a step towards fostering inclusive multilateralism.

Additionally, Tinubu praised Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for establishing the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. He described the initiative as a transformative effort to address pressing global issues through collaboration among governments, international organizations, and civil society.

“This alliance is a bold step in eradicating hunger and poverty, tackling structural causes, and addressing immediate needs,” he said.

Tinubu aligned the Alliance’s objectives with one of the key priorities of his administration, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to adopting global best practices for economic development.

With these proposals, Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to contribute significantly to global governance while advocating for equitable representation for Africa in international decision-making platforms.
