Tyrese Haspil, convicted of murdering Gokada founder Fahim Saleh, was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. Haspil killed Saleh in 2020 after stealing over $400,000 from him. The sentencing emphasizes accountability for the brutal crime that shocked the tech community.

Tyrese Haspil, the former personal assistant convicted of murdering and dismembering Fahim Saleh, the founder of Gokada Nigeria, was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison on September 10. Haspil, 25, was found guilty of murder, grand larceny, and related charges in connection with the brutal killing that took place in July 2020.

The court learned that Haspil had been hired by Saleh but began embezzling funds from his boss’s ventures, including the ride-hailing startup Gokada. After resigning, Haspil continued to steal money from Saleh's businesses, even after Saleh discovered the theft, and allowed him to repay the stolen funds over two years to avoid legal action.

Fearing that Saleh would uncover his ongoing theft, Haspil planned the murder. He attacked Saleh in the elevator of his Manhattan apartment building, using a Taser to incapacitate him before stabbing him to death. The following day, Haspil returned to dismember the body with an electric saw but was interrupted when Saleh's cousin arrived and discovered the gruesome scene.

At the sentencing, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg emphasized the brutality of the crime and expressed hope that the sentence would provide some closure to Saleh's family. He described Saleh as a kind and generous individual whose life was tragically cut short by Haspil's actions.
