A tragic accident occurred during a Christmas procession in Gombe, leaving 22 people injured. The incident happened around 2 p.m. on Bauchi Road in the Tumfure area, where a Volkswagen Sharon vehicle carrying bags of rice veered off course and rammed into the crowd.
The procession, which included Christian faithful heading to the Emir of Gombe’s palace and the government house for a Christmas homage, was being escorted by police officers at the time. The driver of the vehicle reportedly lost control and fled the scene after the crash. In response, an angry mob set the vehicle on fire.
According to Buhari Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Gombe State Police Command, the injured individuals were immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre and the state’s specialist hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
Security operatives and leaders from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) were present to maintain peace and order following the incident. The police assured the public of a thorough investigation, with the Motor Traffic Department tasked with identifying and apprehending the driver responsible for the accident.
The Gombe State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and allow the authorities to handle the situation. Meanwhile, efforts continue to locate the driver and ensure justice for the victims
