The agency highlighted compliance with regulatory codes, content moderation achievements, and the need for ongoing collaboration to sustain Nigeria’s growing digital economy and ensure a safe online space.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced that major global technology companies, including Google, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Microsoft, collectively paid ₦2.55 trillion in taxes to Nigeria during the first half of 2024.
According to NITDA’s statement, which referenced data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the contributions mark a significant boost to the nation’s revenue. The agency highlighted the positive role of the regulatory framework, emphasizing the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms issued jointly by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and NITDA itself.
Compliance with these codes has reportedly driven safer online spaces and improved content moderation. In 2023 alone, over 4.1 million complaints were recorded, resulting in the removal of 65.8 million harmful content pieces, with over 379,000 re-uploaded after user appeals.
Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s director of corporate communications, praised the companies for adhering to local regulations and fostering a responsible digital environment. She also acknowledged the growing importance of Nigeria’s digital economy, noting how international collaboration and innovation could address emerging challenges.
With these contributions and continued efforts, Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in regulating and benefiting from the digital economy. NITDA’s appeal for ongoing cooperation underscores the need for collective action in sustaining growth and ensuring user safety in the evolving online ecosystem.
