Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action against four social media users for spreading false allegations linking him to the paternity of fellow singer Mercy Chinwo's child. Bassey's lawyers submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police, urging swift investigation and action against the individuals responsible for defaming his character.
The allegations, which surfaced last week on various social media platforms, accused Bassey of fathering Chinwo's child, despite her being married to another man. The petition identified the suspects as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ SpoiltKid. Bassey's legal team emphasized the detrimental impact of these accusations on his reputation and called for the suspects to be held accountable under relevant criminal and cybercrime laws.
They highlighted the serious consequences of such false statements, which can destabilize marriages and tarnish individuals' international reputations. Efforts to reach the Police Spokesman for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Additionally, attempts to contact Mercy Chinwo's lawyer were unsuccessful.
