Governor Alia.webp
The Digest:

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has declared free education from Basic One to Nine in all government public schools across the state. Speaking at the maiden Benue Basic Education Summit in Makurdi, the governor said his administration, which has recruited over 9,700 teachers, consistently pays salaries and implements a harmonised retirement age for teachers. The policy aims to provide for the poor and vulnerable and prepare a solid foundation for future leaders. Alia launched "Building Rights to Access and Compulsory Education for Un-enrolled Pupils (BRACE-UP)" to identify out-of-school children, create flexible learning pathways, and track progress. He called on parents, traditional and religious leaders to enforce free and compulsory basic education. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) presented Alia with a golden award for education and teacher friendliness. The governor promised to pay a month's arrears to retired teachers.

Key Points:
  • The policy removes financial barriers to education for vulnerable children in Benue.
  • It aims to reduce out-of-school numbers and improve literacy rates.
  • Poor families gain access, while teachers receive welfare commitments.
  • This signals prioritisation of education infrastructure and human capital.
  • The timing, with teacher recruitment and awards, reinforces commitment.

Gov Alia declares free Basic One-Nine education in Benue public schools, launches BRACE-UP to enroll out-of-school children, and receives NUT award.
