Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an investigation and intervention in the case of Segun Olowookere, a 31-year-old man sentenced to death for stealing a fowl in Osun State. The Governor has directed the Attorney General to initiate a process for granting him a prerogative of mercy.

Governor Ademola Adeleke has taken decisive steps to address the controversial sentencing of Segun Olowookere, a man condemned to death for stealing a fowl in Osun State. Arrested in 2010 at 17 years old, Olowookere spent over a decade on death row due to his family's inability to pay a ₦30,000 bail. Now 31, his case has drawn public outcry over the severity of the punishment.

In response, Governor Adeleke has instructed the state’s Attorney General to fast-track the process for granting Olowookere a prerogative of mercy. The Governor emphasized the importance of justice, equity, and the sanctity of human life, promising urgent action to ensure fairness.

"I have directed the Commissioner for Justice to immediately initiate processes for the young man’s pardon. Osun is a land of justice and fairness. This matter has my full attention, and I am committed to seeing it resolved promptly," Adeleke stated.

The intervention follows a plea from Olowookere's mother, who urged the Governor to review her son’s case. Her appeal highlights the tragic circumstances of a young man whose life was derailed due to poverty and an arguably disproportionate legal response.
