In preparation for the November 16, 2024, Ondo State governorship election, 18 candidates officially signed a peace accord on November 8, committing to a peaceful and credible electoral process. The National Peace Committee (NPC) chairman, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, presided over the event and urged all stakeholders to ensure the election is free from violence.
Abubakar emphasized the importance of accepting the election results, as long as they are deemed fair, and encouraged candidates to use peaceful means to resolve any disputes. Additionally, Abubakar appealed to all parties to demonstrate sportsmanship and avoid intimidation.
The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, praised the NPC's efforts and reminded the candidates that signing the peace accord is only the first step; their commitment to its principles is crucial for ensuring a peaceful election. Yakubu called on religious, traditional leaders, and security agencies to collaborate with INEC in maintaining order during the election.
For the security of voters and election materials, the Inspector-General of Police, represented by DIG Abiodun Alabi, disclosed that 36,637 personnel would be deployed to secure the 3933 polling units across Ondo State.
