Governor Seyi Makinde vows justice for 35 children who died in the Ibadan funfair stampede. Addressing claims of favoritism, he emphasized that no life is superior and pledged a fair investigation. Organizers Prophetess Naomi Ogunseyi and Oriyomi Hamzat face charges as the tragedy sparks calls for accountability.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed his commitment to ensuring justice for the 35 children who tragically died during a stampede at a Christmas charity event in Ibadan on December 11, 2024. The event, organized by Prophetess Naomi Ogunseyi, ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, was held at Bashorun Islamic High School.

Both Ogunseyi and Hamzat, along with the school’s principal, are currently in custody facing charges related to the incident.

Addressing the tragedy, Governor Makinde emphasized that no life is more valuable than another, stating, “If my children were among those who died, I would demand justice too.” He dismissed claims that his connections would influence the case, assuring the public that justice would prevail.

Makinde also recalled rejecting a life insurance proposal that valued his life over that of his driver, underscoring his belief in equality before God and the law. "The lives of the 35 children who died deserve justice just as anyone else’s,” he added.

The governor pledged that anyone found guilty would face consequences, while the innocent would be protected. He urged the public to trust the justice system, reiterating his stance that no one is above the law under his leadership.
