Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has ordered the immediate closure of Saint Academy, Busa Buji, in Jos North LGA, following a tragic building collapse. The governor also mandated the arrest of artisanal miners operating near residential areas.

The incident occurred on Friday, when a two-storey building at the school collapsed, resulting in the deaths of over 20 people, including students and teachers. Many others sustained injuries of varying severity. The State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed that 22 people had died, and 132 were rescued, with the injured receiving treatment in several tertiary health facilities in the state capital.

Governor Mutfwang visited the site of the collapse and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasized the importance of swift action to prevent further tragedies. “I’m ordering the closure of Saint Academy with immediate effect,” the governor stated. “And I’m also ordering security agencies to arrest any artisanal miners mining in residential areas across the state.” The governor assured the public that the government would cover the medical expenses of those injured in the collapse.

The collapse of the building has brought attention to the dangers posed by illegal mining activities and the need for stricter regulations to ensure the safety of residents. The government's response highlights its commitment to protecting the lives of its citizens and addressing the root causes of such tragedies.
