Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki anticipates a potential probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after his term ends next week. Despite opposition criticism, Obaseki asserts he has nothing to hide, highlights his administration’s legacy in Edo, and condemns alleged political “witch-hunts” by rivals in the state.
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has addressed the possibility of facing an investigation by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) once his term concludes next week. Speaking at an event in Abuja, Obaseki noted he’s been informed that EFCC may detain him after he hands over to APC’s Monday Okpebholo on November 12. Despite the anticipated probe, the governor stated he has “nothing to hide” and would use any time in custody productively, even suggesting he’d spend it conducting research.
Reflecting on his eight-year administration, Obaseki highlighted his dedication to lasting reforms in Edo State, which he sees as significant legacy achievements aimed at improving the lives of Edo citizens. He criticized the "cruel and wicked" opposition, accusing political adversaries of pursuing a “vendetta” against him, motivated by jealousy over his accomplishments. Obaseki expressed confidence in his legacy and reaffirmed his commitment to Edo’s development, despite ongoing challenges and alleged political "witch-hunts."
Obaseki’s comments come amid controversy following the recent Edo gubernatorial election, in which his party, the PDP, lost to Okpebholo. His party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, has pledged to contest the election results in court, intensifying political tensions in the state.
