Gunmen attacked Anambra State on Monday, killing at least four people, including vigilante operatives. The attackers, suspected of enforcing the sit-at-home order, targeted residents and security members in Ukpo and Abatete. Vehicles were set ablaze, and several victims, including the President General of Abatete, were injured.
At least four people have been confirmed dead following an attack by gunmen in Anambra State on Monday. The assailants believed to be enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order, targeted both residents and security operatives in the communities of Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area and Abatete in Idemili North.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen arrived at Abatete around 8:30 am, firing indiscriminately at residents. They proceeded to the Ukpo Roundabout, where they continued their deadly attack, shooting at several individuals, including members of the Anambra State Vigilante Operatives.
In addition to the gunfire, the attackers set several vigilante vehicles ablaze. The assault claimed the lives of four vigilante operatives, with disturbing footage circulating on social media showing the bodies of some victims. In one video, a vigilante operative’s lifeless body was seen at the Ukpo Roundabout, while another three bodies were discovered in Abatete.
The President General of Abatete Community, Chimame Ezigbo, was also reportedly wounded during the attack and rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. Another vigilante member sustained injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
Though the total number of casualties has yet to be fully determined, at least four people have been confirmed dead. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed awareness of the attack, assuring the public that an investigation is underway. The police have already deployed officers to the affected areas.
