Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially approved the appointment of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin as the next Olubadan of Ibadan land, according to a statement from his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju. The appointment, confirmed in a memo dated June 14, 2024, follows the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun in March 2024. Olakulehin, previously the Balogun of Ibadanland, succeeds Balogun after his elevation to the ancient throne.

Despite his confirmation, the coronation date for the 89-year-old Olubadan-elect is yet to be announced. The decision has not been without controversy, as concerns were raised over Olakulehin's health, with some kingmakers questioning his fitness for the position. Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Otun Balogun of Ibadan, publicly expressed doubts about Olakulehin's ability to assume the throne due to his health issues and alleged external pressures.

In response, Olakulehin's family and supporters refuted these claims, asserting his readiness and dismissing assertions that his appointment was being forced against his health interests. The situation remains contentious as the community awaits further developments regarding the coronation and the resolution of these health-related concerns.
