The Super Falcons of Nigeria have returned triumphantly to the Olympic stage after securing qualification for the women's football event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. In a closely contested final round of qualifiers against South Africa, Nigeria emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 aggregate scoreline.
The decisive moment came in the first leg, where Rasheedat Ajibade's 43rd-minute penalty proved the historic difference-maker. In the return leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, the Falcons exhibited a resilient defensive performance, holding South Africa to a goalless draw. Coach Randy Waldrum's decision to maintain the same lineup from the first leg paid off as the Falcons controlled the game's tempo and limited South Africa's attacking threats.
Despite a few chances for both sides, the midfield battle remained tight throughout the match. Goalkeeper Chimaka Nnadozie showcased her prowess with a commanding aerial presence, ensuring the Falcons' defensive stability.
With this qualification, Nigeria will make its fourth appearance at the Olympics, having previously competed in 2000, 2004, and 2008. The upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, will see the Super Falcons aiming to significantly impact the global stage of women's football.
