Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, speaking at the closing ceremony of the 3rd Intra-African Trade Fair in Cairo, raised concerns about the emergence of new generations of illiterates due to what he termed the "Internet culture." While acknowledging the positive aspects of instant communication, Soyinka highlighted the darker side, describing it as a "tyrannical, insolent, and abusive culture."
He expressed worries about the degradation of real culture and creativity, particularly in Nigeria, where he noted the real meaning of culture is being undermined by Internet technology.
Soyinka urged vigilance against this phenomenon, emphasizing the need to preserve meaningful culture that enhances humanity's understanding and constructs a genuine new being.
