Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed justice for the 35 children who lost their lives in a stampede at an Ibadan funfair. He assured that event organizers would face trial, regardless of their status, emphasizing his administration's commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for the tragedy.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured the public that justice will prevail following the tragic stampede at a funfair in the Bashorun area of Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 children in December 2024. He emphasized that those responsible will face trial irrespective of their social standing.

The incident occurred during an event organized at Islamic High School, where the lack of adequate safety measures allegedly contributed to the disaster. Following investigations, the police charged the organizers with conspiracy, negligence, and failure to provide necessary security and medical arrangements. A magistrate court has since remanded them in custody.

Addressing concerns from various quarters, Makinde highlighted that his administration is committed to upholding the rule of law. He dismissed comparisons with similar incidents in other states where suspects avoided prosecution, asserting that Oyo State will not compromise on justice.

Makinde acknowledged calls for clemency but maintained that the judicial process must take its course. While granting bail is within legal limits, he stressed that the trial must proceed to ensure accountability.

“This tragedy is a painful reminder of the importance of accountability,” he stated. “Oyo State will remain steadfast in enforcing the rule of law, no matter how influential those involved may be.”
