Oyo State High Court has granted bail to three individuals over their alleged involvement in the December 2024 Ibadan stampede, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children.
Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin approved bail for Naomi Silekunola, the Ooni of Ife's ex-wife; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun. Hamzat’s bail was set at ₦10 million with two sureties, alongside a restriction on his organization from broadcasting related news.
The defendants were arrested following the children’s festive party at Islamic High School, where the stampede occurred. Defense counsel argued for bail last week, emphasizing the defendants' cooperation and low flight risk. However, the Oyo State Attorney General opposed, citing the severity of the charges and the need for justice. The court deferred ruling until Monday, ultimately deciding in favor of granting bail.
Governor Seyi Makinde has insisted on accountability for the tragedy while expressing no objection
