Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has expressed deep gratitude to ex-Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, for reinstating his military rank and recognizing his contributions to the country. Gowon made the remarks in Abuja on Thursday at a book launch honoring Babangida’s legacy.

Reflecting on his turbulent past, Gowon recounted how he was dismissed from the Nigerian Army following the February 13, 1976 coup. While President Shehu Shagari later pardoned him in 1981, it was Babangida who, in 1987, fully restored his rank and honor.

“I had a very rough time in government, even facing charges of treason,” Gowon said. “But President Shagari later overturned that decision, and you, IBB, ensured my rank and dignity were restored. You have done a lot for this country.”

Gowon also highlighted the decades-long bond he has shared with Babangida, calling it a testament to loyalty and friendship.

Other notable figures, including former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, paid tribute to Babangida’s leadership and contributions. Former President Goodluck Jonathan also commended IBB, emphasizing the importance of documenting Nigeria’s history through projects like the newly launched book.

The event, attended by past and present leaders, underscored Babangida’s enduring influence in Nigeria’s political landscape and his role in shaping its history.
