The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says over 1.4 million members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will be deployed for the 2027 general election. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan announced this during a courtesy visit to NYSC Director-General Olakunle Nafiu in Abuja. He stated that for the Presidential and National Assembly election on January 16, 2027, the commission would need 707,384 corps members, with the same number required for the Governorship and Houses of Assembly election on February 6, 2027. Amupitan described corps members as "the most dedicated, educated, and patriotic election duty staff we have."

Key Points:
  • Over 1.4 million young Nigerians will risk their safety to serve as election ad hoc staff in 2027.
  • Corps members make up nearly 90% of registration area officers and presiding officers in many states.
  • The digital proficiency of corps members ensures the smooth operation of BVAS technology.
  • INEC acknowledges that corps members' contributions have "often come at a heavy price," including security risks.
  • The timing of this announcement, well before the 2027 elections, allows for early planning and training.
