In the wake of the suspension of Minister Betta Edu over corruption allegations, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has stepped forward to address the swirling controversy surrounding an alleged N438.1 million consultancy contract between New Planet Project Limited and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended Edu on Monday amidst accusations of corruption. Subsequently, reports surfaced claiming that Tunji-Ojo's company, New Planet Project Limited, received a substantial sum of N438.1 million for consultancy services related to the National Social Register contract, part of the N3 billion contracts awarded by the suspended Minister.
In an exclusive interview on Channels TV Politics Today, Tunji-Ojo responded to the allegations, expressing shock at the reports. He clarified that while he founded the company a decade ago, he resigned from directorship in 2019 when he contested for the House of Representatives.
“I have to say this: I saw it and was shocked because the company in question was where I was the director. About five years ago, I resigned my directorship," Tunji-Ojo stated. "Yes, I founded the company ten years ago. In 2019, when I got to the House of Representatives, I won the election precisely, and I resigned. I resigned on 4th February 2019, with a Certified True Copy of Corporate Affairs Commission as far back as 2019 to prove this.”
Tunji-Ojo emphasized that he was not involved in the day-to-day operations of New Planet Project Limited and distanced himself from the allegations of impropriety.
The controversy deepens as reports reveal that Edu has been under scrutiny for the past three days due to a leaked memo dated December 20, 2023. The memo allegedly instructed the Federation’s Accountant General to transfer funds meant for vulnerable groups into a private account, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding scandal.
As the nation awaits further developments, the Minister's clarification provides a glimpse into the intricate web of allegations, resignations, and political turbulence surrounding the Betta Edu scandal. The story continues to evolve, raising questions about transparency, accountability, and the delicate balance between political power and public trust.
