Senator Ireti Kingibe has pledged to champion the sexual harassment case involving Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the Kogi central lawmaker, after allegations surfaced against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Initially, Kingibe had downplayed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s concerns regarding the Senate’s seating arrangement but later clarified that she was unaware of the harassment allegations at the time.
In a statement on her X page, Kingibe reaffirmed her commitment to fighting gender-based violence and ensuring justice for all. She emphasized that the Senate must thoroughly investigate any formal complaint of sexual harassment and that her office, as the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, would push for transparency in the process.
Kingibe also reiterated her support for women’s rights and gender equity in Nigerian politics. She is advocating for the passage of the 35% Gender Inclusion Bill and the Gender Equity Bill 2025 (SB 743), both aimed at increasing female political representation. She vowed to remain steadfast in the fight against injustice, urging Nigerians to unite in addressing gender-based violence and ensuring a fair society for all.
