Controversial Nigerian sex therapist Jaruma shares her harrowing journey of drug addiction, revealing how a Lagos plastic surgeon and a friend introduced her to hard drugs. After overcoming despair and contemplating suicide, she emphasizes the need for awareness and support for addiction in the entertainment industry.
For over a year, Hauwa Mohammed, better known as Jaruma, a controversial Nigerian sex therapist, has largely remained out of the public eye amid swirling rumors of her battle with drug addiction. Once celebrated as Nigeria’s leading sex therapist, Jaruma gained fame for her extravagant fees, charging up to N1 million for in-person consultations. However, her recent re-emergence at an NDLEA forum shed light on her struggles, revealing that her descent into drug addiction began with influences from a well-known Lagos plastic surgeon and a close friend.
During the NDLEA's X space titled “Drug dependence: Addressing the fear of stigmatization in recovery and overcoming the demon of drugs and stigma: A survivor’s story,” Jaruma recounted how her rapid rise to fame led her to dangerous choices. She described a series of events where a friend introduced her to hard drugs, beginning with marijuana and escalating to more potent substances. Despite her initial resistance, a subsequent encounter with the plastic surgeon, Dr. Anu, proved life-altering. Jaruma recalled how a seemingly innocent offer of an injection transformed into a nightmare, leading to severe addiction and health complications.
As her dependency grew, so did her despair. Jaruma admitted to contemplating suicide, overwhelmed by the consequences of her addiction. “I just wanted to die,” she confessed, recounting a near-fatal incident where she injected herself with multiple doses of drugs. Miraculously, she survived but faced the long road of recovery, underscoring the pressing issue of drug addiction in Nigeria’s glamorous yet perilous entertainment industry.
In a poignant twist, Jaruma revealed that she had initiated legal action against Dr. Anu, who recently passed away. Reflecting on her tumultuous journey, she forgave the late surgeon, illustrating her desire to move forward. Jaruma's story serves as a powerful reminder of the hidden struggles many face behind the glitz and glam of fame, as well as the urgent need for awareness and support for those grappling with addiction.
