Khamis Haruna, a 29-year-old groom, survived a poisoning incident allegedly orchestrated by his 14-year-old bride, just two days after their wedding in Jigawa State. Influenced by an ex-lover, the bride reportedly added poison to his meal, leading to one fatality.

Khamis Haruna, a 29-year-old groom from Jigawa State, has shared his harrowing experience after being poisoned by his 14-year-old bride just two days after their wedding. Haruna revealed that he had been in a two-year relationship with the bride, believing their love to be genuine.

The incident occurred on December 22, 2024, when the bride’s friends delivered a meal of jollof spaghetti to Haruna and two of his friends at his tailoring shop. Shortly after consuming the meal, they detected a harmful substance. Haruna recounted that his friend, Muhammad Alfah, began experiencing severe stomach pain, prompting them to rush to Jahun Hospital. Tragically, Alfah did not survive, while Haruna and another friend, Isyaku Adamu, recovered.

Haruna alleged that his young bride acted under the influence of an ex-lover, who provided the poison and instructed her to use it. “We were married for love,” Haruna said, expressing disbelief at her actions.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of child marriage in Nigeria. While the Child Rights Act prohibits marriage under 18, Jigawa State’s legislature excludes this prohibition, citing subjective maturity.
