Veteran actress Joke Silva has shared details of the efforts made to save iconic singer Onyeka Onwenu after she collapsed at a birthday celebration. In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Silva recounted how Onwenu fell ill during the 80th birthday party of Emzor Pharmaceuticals CEO Stella Okolie in July 2024.
Silva revealed that Shola Momoh, who was at the event, alerted those around when she noticed something was wrong. They had been enjoying the festivities together, dancing and singing “One Love.” However, after returning to their seats, Onwenu slumped over. Despite having a pulse, she was unresponsive.
Immediately, guests began performing CPR on her while medical assistance was sought from doctors at the party. Silva described the frantic scene, emphasizing that everyone tried their best to revive the beloved singer. After being transported to the hospital, Onwenu was pronounced dead an hour and a half later.
Onyeka Onwenu, a revered figure in the music industry, was laid to rest on August 30 at Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi, Lagos. Silva's heartfelt tribute not only highlights the tragic loss of a beloved artist but also underscores the strong bonds of friendship and support that were evident in her final moments. The music community continues to grieve the loss of such a remarkable talent.
