Former President Goodluck Jonathan explained why his administration didn’t implement the 2014 Confab recommendations, citing internal political crises within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He praised leaders like Chief Ayo Adebanjo for their integrity and emphasized the need for national dialogue despite challenges during his tenure.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan recently explained why his administration was unable to implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference. Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Jonathan cited internal crises within the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as one of the key reasons for the failure to execute the recommendations.
Jonathan praised the integrity and wisdom of leaders like Adebanjo, who played pivotal roles in making the conference possible. He noted that the composition of the conference was credible and had full authority to discuss the best interests of the country. Despite his genuine intent to implement the recommendations before his term ended in 2015, political challenges within the PDP prevented any action.
Reflecting on the crisis, Jonathan emphasized the need for national dialogue when a country isn’t progressing as expected. He also noted that although he was criticized for perceived manipulation, the decisions made at the conference were solely for the nation’s benefit.
Jonathan's comments come at a time when calls to revisit the 2014 Confab recommendations have resurfaced, particularly given ongoing political and socio-economic challenges in Nigeria. His remarks underscore the complexity of implementing sweeping reforms in the face of internal party dynamics and external political pressures.
The former president also expressed deep sorrow over the simultaneous deaths of two key Nigerian leaders, Chief Adebanjo and Chief Edwin Clark, both of whom played significant roles in shaping the country’s political discourse. Jonathan lauded their courage, commitment to justice, and belief in truth as foundational values for the nation’s growth.
