Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy will receive most of his unpaid salary after a judge ruled in his favor. Mendy, who was suspended during legal proceedings, argued City withheld around £11 million. The court determined he should receive pay for non-custody periods when he was willing to work.
A judge has ruled that former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy will receive the majority of his unpaid wages, totaling around £11 million, after his suspension without pay. Mendy, who was cleared of multiple rape charges in 2023, took legal action against City, claiming unpaid wages after being suspended from September 2021 until June 2023.
Mendy, whose basic annual wage was £6 million, was in custody for five months during this period and was unable to fulfill his contract due to a Football Association suspension and bail conditions. The judge determined that City was entitled to withhold Mendy’s wages for the five months he was in custody but was not justified in withholding pay during the non-custody periods when Mendy was ready to work.
Judge Joanne Dunlop concluded that Mendy had been “ready and willing” to work but was prevented by external factors. As a result, Mendy is entitled to most of the unpaid salary, though the final amount will be decided either through mutual agreement or a future hearing.
Mendy, who joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017, won several Premier League titles with the club. He now plays for French club Lorient after leaving City when his contract expired.
