Security agencies have neutralized criminal networks, and rehabilitated bandits are reintegrated into society, fostering unity among diverse communities while reducing ethno-religious tensions and violence.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has received a group of repentant bandits as part of his administration’s peacebuilding efforts. Speaking at an event in Birnin Gwari, the governor revealed that the state, in collaboration with federal agencies, has formed a Peace Dialogue Group to foster trust and engagement with key stakeholders.

Governor Sani announced that senior bandit leaders and their followers have surrendered their arms and committed to peace. These individuals are now participating in a rehabilitation program adhering to global standards of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR), enabling them to reintegrate as productive citizens.

The governor emphasized a dual approach of incentives for peace and strict measures against violence. Security agencies have reportedly achieved significant victories, neutralizing bandit kingpins, dismantling criminal networks, and rescuing kidnapped victims.

He also highlighted the development of the "Kaduna Model," a framework for sustainable peace combining DDR programs with rural development and conflict resolution. By addressing the root causes of insecurity and fostering inclusive governance, the initiative aims to unite diverse communities and reduce ethno-religious tensions.

Governor Sani praised the increasing unity among Kaduna residents, noting that communities from various ethnic and religious backgrounds now support the state’s peace initiatives. As a result, insecurity is declining, and harmony is being restored.

The move has drawn mixed reactions online. Some applauded the efforts, while others expressed skepticism about the sincerity of the bandits’ repentance. Governor Sani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustainable peace.
