The Kaduna State House of Assembly has initiated an investigation into the financial transactions of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, spanning his two-term administration from 2015 to 2023. The move comes in response to allegations of a significant debt burden inherited by Governor Uba Sani, who lamented his inability to pay workers' salaries due to a lean treasury. In light of these concerns, the Assembly inaugurated a fact-finding committee to scrutinize all finances, loans, and projects awarded during El-Rufai's tenure.
Sakinatu Idris, the Clerk of the Assembly, issued a letter to the Ministry of Finance, directing them to submit detailed memorandum and documents related to financial transactions within the specified period. The Assembly requested information on total loans approved by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, accounts used for loan disbursements, payments to contractors, salary reports, and other pertinent financial records.
The demand for transparency and accountability underscores the Assembly's commitment to ensuring prudent financial management and effective governance in the state. The investigation aims to shed light on the utilization of public funds, including the terms and conditions of loans, appropriation items, and expenditures on government properties.
The Ministry of Finance has been given until April 25th, 2024, to provide thirty copies of the requested documents to the Clerk's office. The outcome of the probe is anticipated to inform future actions and policy decisions, as stakeholders await the findings of the fact-finding committee.
